NCIt definition : Transforming growth factor beta-1 (390 aa, 44 kDa) is encoded by the human TGFB1
gene. This protein is involved in cell proliferation, cell death and a large number
of signal transduction pathways.;
NCIt note : TGFB is a multifunctional peptide cytokine that controls proliferation, differentiation,
and other functions in many cell types. Many cells synthesize TGFB and almost all
of them have specific receptors for it. TGFB acts synergistically with TGFA in inducing
transformation. It also acts as a negative autocrine growth factor. SMAD proteins
mediate TGFB signaling. SNON appears to maintain the repressed state of TGFB target
genes in the absence of ligand and participates in negative feedback regulation of
TGFB signaling. (from OMIM 190180 and NCI); Transforming growth factor beta-1 is cleaved into the following product: latency-associated
peptide. (UniProt);
