NCIt definition : Prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 (604 aa, 69 kDa) is encoded by the human PTGS2 gene.
This protein plays a role in prostaglandin metabolism.;
Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: An enzyme that speeds up the formation of substances that cause inflammation
and pain. It may also cause tumor cells to grow. Some tumors have high levels of COX-2
and blocking its activity may reduce tumor growth.;
NCIt note : A rate-limiting enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins, COX-2
is expressed in cells involved in inflammatory processes and has been implicated in
tumor promotion as well as a negative prognosis. COX-2 is expressed in 50% of pancreatic
tumors. Anti-inflammatory glucocorticoids are potent inhibitors of cyclooxygenase.
Inhibition or lack of COX-2 reduces tumor growth and blocks angiogenesis. Aspirin
and etodolac, both COX-2 inhibitors, inhibit growth of pancreatic cancer cell lines.
