NCIt definition : Epithelial cell adhesion molecule (314 aa, 35 kDa) is encoded by the human EPCAM gene. This protein is involved in both cell adhesion and cellular proliferation.;

NCIt note : Ep-CAM is a cell adhesion molecule expressed in epithelial cells and a ligand for leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor 1 (LAIR1). Ep-CAM also binds to LAIR2. Ep-CAM may act to prevent an excessive inflammatory response. Over expression of Ep-CAM in breast cancer may be correlated with the histologic grade of the disease and a predictor of poor prognosis.
