NCIt definition : A family of ligases that are involved in translation. These enzymes catalyze the transesterification
reaction that attaches amino acids with their cognate tRNAs. There are cytoplasmic
and mitochondrial forms for many of these enzymes. Some of the cytoplasmic amino acid
synthetases are targets for autoantibodies in the autoimmune diseases polymyositis
and dermatomyositis.;
Alternative definition : CDISC: One or more of the antigen(s) from the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase family and
are enzymes that attach the appropriate amino acids onto their corresponding tRNAs.
This family of proteins may be comprised of (but not limited to) histidyl- (Jo-1),
threonyl- (PL-7), alanyl- (PL-12), glycyl- (EJ), isoleucyl- (OJ), asparaginyl- (KS),
phenylalanyl- (Zo), and tyrosyl- (YRS) tRNA synthetases. They can be considered as
autoantigens and are commonly associated with the autoimmune diseases polymyositis
and dermatomyositis.;
