Preferred Label : CD44 Antigen;
NCIt synonyms : CD44; HUTCH-1; gp85; Hermes Antigen; CD44 Adhesion Receptor; Hyaluronate Receptor; Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycan; PGP-1; Epican; PGP-I; ECMR-III; Phagocytic Glycoprotein 1; Extracellular Matrix Receptor III; INLU-Related p80 Glycoprotein; GP90 Lymphocyte Homing/Adhesion Receptor; CDw44; Phagocytic Glycoprotein I;
NCIt definition : CD44 antigen (742 aa, 82 kDa) is encoded by the human CD44 gene. This protein is
involved in cell-cell adhesion and cell-matrix adhesion.;
NCIt note : Acidic sulfated integral membrane glycoproteins expressed in several alternatively
spliced and variable glycosylated forms on a wide variety of cell types including
mature T-cells, B-cells, medullary thymocytes, granulocytes, macrophages, erythrocytes,
and fibroblasts. CD44 antigens are the principle cell surface receptors for hyaluronate
and this interaction mediates binding of lymphocytes to high endothelial venules.
(From Abbas et al., Cellular and Molecular Immunology, 2d ed, p156); CD44 antigen exists as multiple isoforms generated by alternative splicing. Some splice
variants have other biological functions and some are seen more frequently in tumors.;
