Preferred Label : Lactotransferrin;

NCIt synonyms : Lactoferrin; EC 3.4.21.-; Talalactoferrin; Neutrophil Lactoferrin; LTF; Growth-Inhibiting Protein 12; Epididymis Luminal Protein 110;

NCIt definition : Lactotransferrin (710 aa, 78 kDa) is encoded by the human LTF gene. This protein is involved in the mediation of both proteolysis and iron transport.;

Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: A protein that is found in milk, tears, mucus, bile, and some white blood cells and is being studied in the treatment and prevention of cancer. It is involved in fighting against infection and inflammation and it acts as an antioxidant.; CDISC: An antigen encoded by the LTF gene that binds to iron and has antimicrobial function. It can be considered as an autoantigen and is commonly associated with the autoimmune diseases rheumatoid vasculitis and arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease.;

NCIt note : Lactotransferrin can be cleaved to form lactoferricin-H (Lfcin-H), kaliocin-1, lactoferroxin-A, lactoferroxin-B and, lactoferroxin-C. Lactoferroxins A, B and C have opioid antagonist activity. (UniProt); The lactotransferrin transferrin-like domain 1 can act as a serine protease of the peptidase S60 family that cuts arginine rich regions. This enzymatic function contributes to the antimicrobial activity. (UniProt);
