NCIt definition : Human BIRC3 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 11q25 and is approximately
14 kb in length. This allele, which encodes baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein
3, is involved in apoptotic inhibition by serum deprivation.;
NCIt note : BIRC3 inhibits apoptosis induced by serum deprivation but does not affect apoptosis
resulting from exposure to menadione, a potent inducer of free radicals. The protein
encoded by this gene is a member of a family of proteins that inhibits apoptosis by
binding to tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factors TRAF1 and TRAF2, probably
by interfering with activation of ICE-like proteases. The amino acid sequence predicts
three baculovirus IAP repeat domains and a ring-type zinc finger domain while the
Zn binding domain is involved in protein-protein interactions in caspase inhibition
and spindle assembly. BIRC3 is present in many fetal and adult tissues and mainly
expressed in adult skeletal muscle, thymus, testis, ovary, and pancreas, low or absent
in brain and peripheral blood leukocytes.; The BIRC3 gene is involved in a chromosomal translocation t(11;18)(q21;q21) with the
MALT1 gene in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas.;
