NCIt definition : Complement C1s subcomponent (688 aa, 77 kDa) is encoded by the human C1S gene. This
protein plays a role in the proteolytic activation of complement components C2 and
C4.;
NCIt note : Complement C1 complex is composed of 1 molecule of C1q, 2 molecules of C1r and 2 molecules
of C1s. When antigen-antibody complexes, pentraxins or pathogens bind C1q, its conformation
changes and causes activation of C1r. Active C1r cleaves C1s into A (heavy) and B
(light) chains. The C1s B chain contains the active site that cleaves an Arg-/-Ala
bond in complement component C4 to form C4a and C4b, and a Lys(or Arg)-/-Lys bond
in complement component C2 to form C2a and C2b. (UniProt);
