NCIt definition : Human CDKN2A wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 9p21 and is approximately
27 kb in length. This allele, which encodes both cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor
2A protein and and tumor suppressor ARF protein, is involved in cell cycle regulation
at the G1 phase. The allele is frequently mutated or deleted in a wide variety of
tumors, and is known to be an important tumor suppressor gene.;
NCIt note : CDKN2A disruptions such as chromosomal inversions, translocations, and deletions are
associated with malignancies and in a variety of malignant cell lines from glioma,
non-small cell lung cancer, leukemia, melanoma and tumors of the breast, bone, skin,
bladder, kidney, and ovary. Three alternatively spliced variants that encode distinct
proteins have been reported in the literature, two of which encode structurally related
isoforms known to function as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase. The remaining transcript
includes an alternate first exon located 20 Kb upstream of the remainder of the gene;
this transcript contains an alternate open reading frame (ARF) that specifies a protein
which is structurally unrelated to the products of the other variants.;
