NCIt definition : Human XAIP wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of Xq25 and is approximately
54 kb in length. This allele, which encodes baculoviral IAP repeat-containing protein
4, is involved in anti-apoptotic activities through caspase inhibition.;
NCIt note : Similarly to BIRC2, BIRC4 inhibits apoptosis induced by menadione, a potent inducer
of free radicals, and ICE. BIRC4 also specifically inhibits two members of the caspase
family of cell-death proteases, caspase-3 and caspase-7. A novel transcript homologous
to BIRC4 is expressed solely in the testis. The protein encoded by this gene is a
member of a family of proteins which inhibit apoptosis through binding to tumor necrosis
factor receptor-associated factors TRAF1 and TRAF2.;
