NCIt definition : Human NOS2A wild-type allele is located within 17q11.2-q12 and is approximately 44
kb in length. This allele, which encodes nitric oxide synthase, inducible protein,
plays a role in the biosynthesis of nitric oxide from L-arginine and molecular oxygen.
NOS2A gene expression is up-regulated in liver cirrhosis and contributes to the progression
of this disease state. The NOS2A gene is also involved in susceptibility to essential
hypertension.;
NCIt note : The NOS2A gene is expressed in the liver, retina, bone cells and lung epithelial cells.
Gene expression is induced by endotoxins and cytokines whereas aspirin inhibits expression.
Alternative splicing of the NOS2A gene results in the production of two protein isoforms.;
