NCIt definition : Lactadherin (387 aa, 43 kDa) is encoded by the human MFGE8 gene. This protein plays
a role in cell adhesion, phagocytosis of apoptotic cells, integrin binding, intestinal
epithelial homeostasis and the promotion of mucosal healing.;
NCIt note : Lactadherin is a multidomain cell surface (and secreted) protein that contains an
EGF-like domain, C-terminal F5/8 type C domains, and the cell adhesion tripeptide
RGD. It is expressed in mammary epithelia and by activated macrophages. MFGE8 recognizes
aminophospholipids (phosphatidylserine) and binds to cells via its RGD motif; MFGE8
binds strongly to cells expressing alpha-V/beta-3 integrin.; Lactadherin is cleaved at amino acid positions 265 and 317, which releases a 50 amino
acid peptide called medin. Medin is the predominant protein in aortic medial amyloid.;
