NCIt definition : B-cell lymphoma 6 protein (706 aa, 79 kDa) is encoded by the human BCL6 gene. This protein is involved in transcriptional repression, apoptosis regulation and cell cycle progression.;

NCIt note : B-Cell Lymphoma 6 Protein is a zinc finger transcription factor containing an N-terminal POZ domain. It acts as a sequence-specific repressor of transcription and its activity is dependent upon DNA-binding and on the N-terminal region containing the POZ motif. This protein can interact with a variety of POZ-containing proteins that function as transcription corepressors. Target genes have roles in B-cell activation, B-cell differentiation, inflammation, and cell cycle control. Expression of BCL6 in some B-cells early in the antigen response may skew them toward a germinal center fate, away from a plasma cell fate. The BCL6 gene is found to be frequently translocated and hypermutated in diffuse large-cell lymphoma (DLCL), and may be involved in the pathogenesis of DLCL. (from OMIM, and LocusLink);
