Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein 1 - CISMeF
Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein 1NCIt concept
Preferred Label : Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein 1;
NCIt synonyms : SREBF1; Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Transcription Factor 1; bHLHd1; SREBP-1; Class D Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Protein 1;
NCIt definition : Sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (1147 aa, 122 kDa) is encoded by the
human SREBF1 gene. This protein is involved in both transcriptional activation and
cholesterol homeostasis.;
NCIt note : The sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 is complexed with sterol regulatory
element-binding protein cleavage-activating protein in the ER. When cholesterol levels
are low, the complex is exported to the Golgi complex where sterol regulatory element-binding
protein 1 is cleaved sequentially by site-1 and site-2 proteases. The first cleavage
the by site-1 protease occurs within the luminal loop, the second cleavage by the
site-2 protease occurs within the first transmembrane domain and releases the transcription
factor from the Golgi membrane. After site-2 cleavage, sterol regulatory element-binding
protein 1 can be imported into the nucleus where it can activate gene transcription.
(UniProt); Sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 binds to both the sterol regulatory element
1 (SRE-1) (5'-ATCACCCCAC-3') and the E-box motif (5'-ATCACGTGA-3'). (UniProt);
