NCIt definition : Transthyretin (147 aa, 16 kDa) is encoded by the human TTR gene. This protein is
involved in both the binding and transport of retinol and thyroxine.;
NCIt note : Transthyretin is a homotetramer with two thyroxine binding sites. Less than 1% of
plasma transthyretin is involved in thyroxine transport, while 40% is in a tight protein-protein
complex with the plasma retinol-binding protein (RBP). The formation of the complex
with RBP stabilizes the binding of retinol to RBP and decreases the glomerular filtration
and renal catabolism of the RBP molecule. (UniProt);
