NCIt definition : Human ALK wild-type allele is located within 2p23 and is approximately 729 kb in length. This allele, which encodes ALK tyrosine kinase receptor protein, plays a role in brain development and exerts its effects on specific neurons in the nervous system.;

NCIt note : Germline mutations in ALK gene were found in in the vast majority of families with inherited form of neuroblastoma. Somatic ALK mutations were also found in 12% of spontaneous tumor samples. 21 October, NCI Cancer Bulletin 5, 21 (2008).; An inversion on chromosome 2, which fuses the ALK gene to the EML4 gene, is associated with non-small cell lung cancer. This fusion results in both the redistribution of the ALK tyrosine kinase protein from the cell membrane to the cytoplasm and in kinase-activating dimerization. (Nature 2007; 448: 561-566.);
