Voltage-Dependent Anion-Selective Channel Protein 2 - CISMeF
Voltage-Dependent Anion-Selective Channel Protein 2NCIt concept
Preferred Label : Voltage-Dependent Anion-Selective Channel Protein 2;
NCIt synonyms : VDAC-2; Outer Mitochondrial Membrane Protein Porin-2; Voltage-Dependent Anion-Selective Channel Protein-2; hVDAC2; Voltage-Dependent Anion Channel-2; Outer Mitochondrial Membrane Protein Porin 2;
NCIt definition : Voltage-dependent anion-selective channel protein 2 (294 aa, 32 kDa) is encoded by
the human VDAC2 gene. This protein is involved in mitochondrial outer membrane permeability.;
NCIt note : Voltage-dependent anion-selective channel protein 2 (VDAC2) interacts specifically
with inactive BAK, preventing BAK activation and inhibiting the mitochondrial apoptotic
pathway. Apoptotic signals activate BH3-molecules such as tBID, BIM, or BAD, which
displace VDAC2 from BAK, enabling BAK homooligomerization and apoptosis. VDAC2 is
also the mitochondrial binding site of metabolic enzymes hexokinase and glycerol kinase.;
