NCIt definition : A family of chymotrypsin-like serine proteinases that specifically hydrolyze amino
bonds on the carboxyl side of hydrophobic amino acids, including alanine, leucine,
methionine and phenylalanine. These enzymes play roles in digestion and pancreatic
regulation of insulin. Elastin is a substrate for some members of the family. Measurement
of the concentration of certain pancreatic elastase isoforms in feces can be correlated
to the exocrine secretory capacity of the pancreas.;
NCIt note : Humans express five pancreatic elastases: CELA1, CELA2A, CELA2B, CELA3A and CELA3B.
CELA1 is not expressed by the pancreas.;
