NCIt note : Two isoforms of the IL6R gene are expressed one has a transmembrane domain and the other is a secreted molecule. Both IL6R gene products bind to the IL6 gene product. The membrane bound isoform must be in a complex with the IL6ST gene product to initiate signal transduction, while the soluble form is an agonist for IL6-mediated signaling. (SwissProt);
