NCIt definition : Human HK2 wild-type allele is located within 2p13 and is approximately 61 kb in length.
This allele, which encodes hexokinase-2 protein, plays a role in the phosphorylation
of glucose to produce glucose-6-phosphate.;
NCIt note : The HK2 gene is expressed in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle. Up-regulation
of HK2 gene expression may contribute to the increased rate of glycolysis seen in
rapidly growing cancer cells. The promoter region of the HK2 gene isolated from hepatoma
cells displays consensus motifs for hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1). Under hypoxic
conditions, the HK2 gene promoter is activated, and this effect is dramatically increased
in the presence of glucose. Induction of HK2 gene expression in hepatoma cells under
hypoxic conditions may confer a growth and survival advantage over their normal parental
cells of origin.;
