NCIt definition : Human NQO1 wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 16q22.1 and is approximately
17 kb in length. This allele, which encodes NAD(P)H dehydrogenase [quinone] 1 protein,
plays a role in the reduction of quinones to hydroquinones. It is also involved in
the biosynthesis of prothrombin. The NQO1 gene is overexpressed in many types of cancer.;
NCIt note : Benzene metabolites induce NQO1 gene expression. However, individuals homozygous for
a certain allelic variant of this gene do not express NAD(P)H dehydrogenase [quinone]
1 protein and are susceptible to benzene-induced hematotoxicity. Allelic variants
of the NQO1 gene which encode a protein product with diminished or abolished enzymatic
activity are associated with a decreased risk for the development of lung cancer.;
