NCIt definition : Cadherin-5 (784 aa, 88 kDa) is encoded by the human CDH5 gene. This protein is involved
in endothelial cell polarity and cell-cell adhesion.;
NCIt note : Encoded by human CDH5 Gene (CDH Family), 784-amino acid 87.5 kD (precursor) Vascular
Endothelial Cadherin is a Ca(2 )-dependent homophilic endothelial cell-cell adhesion
type I membrane glycoprotein composed of five extracellular cadherin repeats, a transmembrane
region, and a highly conserved cytoplasmic tail. Expressed specifically in endothelial
cells and brain, VE-Cadherin is found mainly at cell-cell boundaries, associated with
intercellular junctions. CDH5 may play a role in endothelial cell cohesion and organization
of intercellular junctions. CDH5/beta-catenin signaling may control endothelial survival.
CDH5 associates with alpha-catenin, forming a link to the cytoskeleton.;
