NCIt definition : Endostatin (183 aa, 20 kDa) is encoded by the human COL18A1 gene. This protein fragment
is involved in the inhibition of both endothelial cell proliferation and blood vessel
formation.;
Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: A substance being studied in the treatment of cancer. COL18A1 is made from
a type of collagen (a protein found in cartilage and other connective tissue). It
may prevent the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. COL18A1 is a
type of antiangiogenesis agent.;
NCIt note : Endostatin is a 20 kD C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII that inhibits endothelial
proliferation and angiogenesis. Cell surface proteoglycans glypican-1 and glypican-4
are endostatin receptors. Heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans of glypican are critical
for endostatin binding. Endostatin also promotes renal tubular cell branching morphogenesis.
