Preferred Label : Histone H4;
NCIt synonyms : Histone-H4; HIST1H4; Histone 1, H4;
NCIt related terms : H4;
NCIt definition : Histone H4 (103 aa, 11 kDa) is encoded by the human H4C1, H4C2, H4C3, H4C4, H4C5,
H4C6, H4C6, H4C8, H4C9, H4C11, H4C12, H4C13, H4C14, H4C15, H4-16 genes. This protein
plays a role in nucleating the formation of high order chromatin structures as a part
of nucleosomes.;
Alternative definition : CDISC: An antigen in the core histone family and a subunit of the nucleosome complex,
with a designation of H4. It can be considered as an autoantigen and is commonly associated
with the autoimmune diseases systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.;
NCIt note : Histone H4 is a core subunit of the eukaryotic nucleosome complex. Histones are basic
nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromatin. Repeating
nucleosome units contain two molecules each of Histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 that
form an octamer complex around which approximately 146 base pairs of DNA is wrapped.
The nucleosome interacts with DNA between nucleosome units in mediating chromatin
compaction into higher order structures.; Histone H4 is encoded for by a cluster of genes that are clustered in the vicinity
of 6p21.33 and all have the same SwissProt identifier.;
