Preferred Label : Collagen Alpha-3(VI) Chain;

NCIt synonyms : Type VI Collagen Alpha 3 Chain; Collagen VI, Alpha-3 Polypeptide; Collagen Type VI Alpha 3 Chain; COL6A3; Collagen Type VI Alpha 3 Polypeptide;

NCIt definition : Collagen alpha-3(VI) chain (3177 aa, 344 kDa) is encoded by the human COL6A3 gene. This protein plays a role in extracellular matrix formation and cell-matrix adhesion in connective tissues.;

NCIt note : Collagen alpha-3(VI) chain is much larger than the alpha-1 and -2 chains due to an increased number of von Willebrand Factor type A (vWFA) subdomains in the amino terminal globular domain of the alpha-3 chain. (EntrezGene); Monomeric triple-helical type VI collagen consists of three different alpha chains. These monomers are assembled intracellularly into dimers and tetramers bound by interchain disulfide linkages. Following processing and secretion, the tetramers bind end-to-end to form double-beaded collagen VI microfibrils. (Ann N Y Acad Sci. 1985;460:25-37.);
