" /> Phase II Detoxification - CISMeF

Preferred Label : Phase II Detoxification;

Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: A process in which the liver uses one of two major enzyme pathways to change a toxic substance, such as an anticancer drug, into a less toxic substance that is easier for the body to excrete. In phase II detoxification, liver cells add a substance (such as cysteine, glycine, or a sulfur molecule) to a toxic chemical or drug, to make it less harmful.;

NCIt note : Phase II detoxification pathways leverage transferases to conjugate large water-soluble molecule with toxins, usually at a reactive site formed during Phase I detoxification. Following conjugation, the body is able to eliminate the transformed toxins in the urine or the feces. (see Peace-Brewer, AL. DetoxiGenomic Profile, Physicians Copy. Genova Diagnostics. GDX-4-179.
