NCIt definition : Human DCK wild-type allele is located in the vicinity of 4q13.3-q21.1 and is approximately
37 kb in length. This allele, which encodes deoxycytidine kinase protein, plays a
role in the phosphorylation of certain deoxyribonucleosides and their nucleoside analogs.;
NCIt note : The DCK gene is clinically important because of its role in therapeutic drug sensitivity.
Decreased levels of deoxycytidine kinase are associated with resistance to both antiviral
and anticancer nucleoside analogs. Elevated deoxycytidine kinase activity results
in activation of these drugs to their corresponding cytotoxic nucleoside triphosphates.
An allelic variant of the DCK gene is associated with poor response to chemotherapy
in patients with acute myeloid leukemia.;
