NCIt definition : Human HMOX1 wild-type allele is located within 22q12 and is approximately 13 kb in
length. This allele, which encodes heme oxygenase 1 protein, plays a role in the conversion
of heme to bilirubin and carbon monoxide. Certain allelic variants of the HMOX1 gene
are associated with heme oxygenase 1 deficiency.;
NCIt note : Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the HMOX1 gene are associated with susceptibility
to lung adenocarcinoma and oral squamous cell carcinoma. HMOX1 gene expression is
induced by its heme substrate, bromobenzene, endotoxin, heavy metals, oxidizing agents
and UV-A radiation.;
