Preferred Label : Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor C;

NCIt synonyms : VRP; VEGF-C; FLT4 Ligand; Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Related Protein; Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-Related Protein; VEGFC; FLT4-L; Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-C;

NCIt definition : Vascular endothelial growth factor C (232 aa, 27 kDa) is encoded by the human VEGFC gene. This protein is involved in both cell proliferation and angiogenesis.;

NCIt note : Encoded by human VEGFC Gene (PDGF/VEGF Family), VEGFC is expressed in spleen, lymph node, thymus, appendix, bone marrow, heart, placenta, ovary, skeletal muscle, prostate, testis, colon, and small intestine, as well as fetal liver, lung, and kidney. Active in angiogenesis, endothelial growth, and vascular permeability, VEGFC may maintain adult lymphatic endothelium. A FLT4 ligand, VEGFC is a 419-amino acid 47 kD (precursor) disulfide-linked homodimeric secreted polypeptide with C-terminal cysteine-rich BR3P repeats and similar to VEGF and VEGFB/VRF. VEGFC can also activate endothelial VEGFR2 (KDR/FLK1). VEGFC proteolytic maturation generates isoforms with increased VEGFR3 activity; fully processed VEGFC activates VEGFR2. Mature VEGFC is mostly composed of two VEGF homology domains bound by non-covalent interactions. (OMIM, Swiss-Prot, LocusLink, and NCI);
