NCIt definition : Platelet factor 4 (101 aa, 11 kDa) is encoded by the human PF4 gene. This protein
is involved in the negative regulation of endothelial cell proliferation, the chemotaxis
of neutrophils and monocytes and the positive regulation of blood coagulation.;
NCIt note : Platelet factor 4 is released from the alpha-granules of activated platelets and binds
with high affinity to heparin. Its heparin-binding ability causes the neutralization
of heparin-like molecules on the endothelial surface of blood vessels, which leads
to the inhibition of local antithrombin III activity and promotes coagulation. PF4
is a strong chemoattractant for neutrophils and fibroblasts, which indicates a potential
role in inflammation and wound repair. (OMIM);
