Preferred Label : Polymeric Immunoglobulin Receptor;

NCIt synonyms : Hepatocellular Carcinoma Associated Protein TB6; Hepatocellular Carcinoma-Associated Protein TB6; Poly-Ig Receptor; PIgR;

NCIt definition : Polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (764 aa, 83 kDa) is encoded by the human PIGR gene. This protein is involved in basolateral-to-apical transcytosis of IgA and IgM polymers across epithelial cells.;

NCIt note : 19 N-terminal amino acids are cleaved from the full-length polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (PIgR) to yield the mature receptor. Once PIgR binds polymeric immunoglobulin (Ig) molecules at the basolateral surface of epithelial cells, the complex is internalized and transported across the cell. During transport of the PIgR-Ig complex, the PIgR moiety is subjected to C-terminal cleavage, which removes the transmembrane domain and yields a polypeptide called secretory component. Once the complex reaches the apical surface, the secretory component-Ig complex is secreted.;
