NCIt definition : Nuclear receptor corepressor 1 (2440 aa, 270 kDa) is encoded by the human NCOR1 gene.
This protein is involved in both transcriptional repression and chromatin remodeling.;
NCIt note : N-CoR mediates ligand-independent inhibition of gene transcription by THR1 and RARs.
The amino terminus of NCOR1 has striking homology to SMRT. NCOR1 and SMRT contain
sequences similar to the NR box in two nuclear hormone receptor interaction domains.
This CoRNR box is required for nuclear hormone receptor interaction. Sequences flanking
the CoRNR box determine nuclear hormone receptor specificity. Hormone action and differential
recognition of unliganded and liganded nuclear hormone receptors by co-activators
and co-repressors appears to be due to subtle differences between CoRNR and NR boxes.
