NCIt definition : Forkhead box protein G1 (489 aa, 52 kDa) is encoded by the human FOXG1 gene. This protein is involved in transcriptional regulation, and brain development.;

NCIt note : Forkhead Box Protein G1 acts as transcriptional repressor and belongs to the large FKH/HNF3 family of transcription factors, that includes the Drosophila homeotic FKH and mammalian HNF3 and BF1 proteins. Family members share a unique DNA-binding FKH box. FOXG1 expression is restricted to telencephalic neurons, with strong expression in the dentate gyrus and hippocampus. (OMIM); The original characterization of forkhead box protein G1 inferred that there were 3 related but distinct genes and proteins in this family. Later it was discovered that there was only one gene encoding one protein and that the unique exon structure may have been the cause of sequence inconsistencies. (UniProt);
