NCIt definition : Proheparin-binding EGF-like growth factor (208 aa, 23 kDa) is encoded by the human
HBEGF gene. This protein plays a role in both heart valve formation and mitogenesis
for fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells.;
NCIt note : The active form of the growth factor, called heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor,
is produced by two proteolytic cleavage events that remove 62 N-terminal amino acids
and 60 amino acids from the C-terminus of proheparin-binding EGF-like growth factor.
The precursor is a type I membrane protein and the mature form is a secreted protein.
