NCIt definition : A family of actin and calcium binding proteins found mostly in smooth muscle-containing tissues. These proteins play a role in the regulation of actin/myosin interactions and the subsequent mediation of smooth muscle contraction.;

NCIt note : There are three calponin proteins encoded by distinct genes. Calponin-1 and calponin-2 are expressed in smooth muscle. Calponin-3 is expressed at low levels in smooth muscle and is also expressed by some non-muscle tissues.;
