" /> Sex-Determining Region Y Protein - CISMeF

Preferred Label : Sex-Determining Region Y Protein;

NCIt synonyms : Testis-Determining Factor; SRY;

NCIt definition : Sex-determining region Y protein (204 aa, 24 kDa) is encoded by the human SRY gene. This protein is involved in sex determination and transcriptional regulation.;

NCIt note : SRY is an HMG-box family protein, and the HMG box is the only region that has been conserved through evolution, suggesting that SRY acts as an architectural transcription factor. In mice, a C-terminal GLU-rich region has been shown to be essential for testis formation, though this region is absent in SRY from other mammals. This observation raises the possibility that sex determination in vivo may occur by a fundamentally different biochemical mechanism in mice than in other mammals. However, some data in human patients indicates that modifier genes affect the phenotype in addition to the presumed Testis Determination Factor (TDF) SRY;
