As a folate analogue, aminopterin competes for the folate binding site of the enzyme
dihydrofolate reductase, thereby blocking tetrahydrofolate synthesis, and resulting
in depletion of nucleotide precursors and inhibition of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis.
