Preferred Label : Osteoporosis;

NCIt definition : A condition of reduced bone mass, with decreased cortical thickness and a decrease in the number and size of the trabeculae of cancellous bone (but normal chemical composition), resulting in increased fracture incidence. Osteoporosis is classified as primary (Type 1, postmenopausal osteoporosis; Type 2, age-associated osteoporosis; and idiopathic, which can affect juveniles, premenopausal women, and middle-aged men) and secondary osteoporosis (which results from an identifiable cause of bone mass loss).;

Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: A condition that is marked by a decrease in bone mass and density, causing bones to become fragile.; CTCAE: A disorder characterized by reduced bone mass, with a decrease in cortical thickness and in the number and size of the trabeculae of cancellous bone (but normal chemical composition), resulting in increased fracture incidence.; NICHD: Reduced bone mineral density due to decreased number and thickness of bone trabeculae and decreased cortical thickness, associated with increased risk of skeletal fractures. A clinical diagnosis of osteoporosis in childhood requires either a finding of one or more otherwise unexplained vertebral compression fractures, or the presence of bone mineral density Z-score less than or equal to 2.0 accompanied by one or more of the following: 1) at least two long bone fractures by age 10 years; 2) at least three long bone fractures up to age 19 years.;
