Inactive G proteins consist of alpha/beta/gamma complexes that signal as dissociated GTP-bound alpha subunit or the beta/gamma complex. GTP hydrolysis by the inherent GTPase reverts the alpha subunit to its inactive (heterotrimeric) form.
