Preferred Label : Choriogonadotropin Subunit Beta 3;
NCIt synonyms : Chorionic Gonadotrophin Beta Subunit; CGB3; Chorionic Gonadotropin Beta Chain; CG-Beta; hCGBeta; hCG-Beta; Chorionic Gonadotropin Beta Polypeptide; Chorionic Gonadotropin Beta 3 Subunit; Choriogonadotropin Beta Chain; Chorionic Gonadotropin, Beta Chain; Chorionic Gonadotropin, Beta Polypeptide 3; Chorionic Gonadotropin Chain Beta; Choriogonadotropin Subunit Beta; Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Beta Subunit;
NCIt related terms : beta-hCG; beta-human chorionic gonadotropin;
NCIt definition : Choriogonadotropin subunit beta 3 (165 aa, 18 kDa) is encoded by the human CGB3,
CGB5, and CGB8 genes. This protein is involved in the regulation of steroid synthesis
during pregnancy.;
Alternative definition : NCI-GLOSS: A hormone normally found in the blood and urine during pregnancy. It may
also be produced by some tumor cells. An increased level of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin
may be a sign of cancer of the testis, uterus, ovary, liver, stomach, pancreas, or
lung. Beta-human chorionic gonadotropin may also be produced in response to certain
conditions that are not cancer. Beta-human chorionic gonadotropin is being studied
in the treatment of Kaposi sarcoma.;
NCIt note : Human chorionic gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone produced by placental trophoblasts
10-12 days after conception and during the first trimester. HCG binds to the corpus
luteum to stimulate progesterone production, which maintains the secretory endometrium
and the fetus. HCG is a heterodimer of a common alpha chain and a unique beta chain
that confers biological specificity to thyrotropin, lutropin, follitropin and gonadotropin.
(from OMIM 118860, SWISS-PROT P01233, and NCI); Two specific human choriogonadotropin subunit beta proteins that differ by three amino
acids in positions 2,4 and 117 have been described: type 1 (encoded by the human CGB7
gene) and type 2 (encoded by the human CGB3, CGB5, and CGB8 genes). (UniProt);
