A retrospective study of 100 patients who are glaucoma suspects or have glaucoma (and who have had visual field testing, corneal thickness measurement, clinical assessment of the cup over disc ratio and HRT-2 testing) was undertaken to elucidate the usefulness of the addition of HRT-2 to the diagnostic armamentarium of glaucoma. The following questions were asked: 1) Is there any strong correlation between the abnormalities of the HRT-2 tests and visual field abnormalities? 2) Is there any strong correlation between the abnormalities of the red free image of the HRT-2 tests and the clinical assessment of the optic nerve appearance i. e worsening of the cup over disc ratio? 3) Is there any correlation between repeated tests of the HRT-2 done at varying intervals in the same patient in regards to giving reliable results to aid in the evaluation of progression of glaucoma? A discussion of the above questions will also be accompanied by a number of case reports to illustrate the importance or not of HRT-2 testing in glaucoma suspects and established patients with glaucoma.
