Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is characterized by progressive unavoidable loss of independence but with preserved intellectual capacity. Care requires human and technical compensation taking into account the desires of the patient and his/her family. Care should be taken to avoid isolating from the social environment by implementing coherent material and human organizations aimed at maintaining patient comfort and acceptable quality of life "to the end" while respecting the rights and will of the care recipient.
