This is a general review of the literature on secular trends in age at menarche. Changes over time from classical Greece to the present are described, and the factors affecting age at menarche are considered. The absence of significant differences between social groups today suggests that an optimum menarcheal age exists that is normally masked by inadequate living conditions. (summary in ENG)
