Within 72 hours after intercourse, it is advisable to use an oral contraceptive containing .05 mg ethinyl estradiol and .25 mg d-norgestrel--2 tablets twice within 12 hours. However, this should be reserved for emergencies only. IUDs are also effective postcoitally. They have the advantage of being efficient for up to 6 days after intercourse. Furthermore, they insure longterm contraception. Unfortunately, the IUD use is not applicable in all cases. Postcoital contraception thus prevents therapeutic abortions. It is proposed that this method should be used more frequently. (author's modified)
