Résumé

Results are presented upon the evolution of the Innu population living in Quebec¿s reserves during 1973-93. Innus are one of 11 indigenous peoples living in Quebec. Data for this study were drawn from the Indian Registry and Canada¿s public health and social welfare systems. Created in 1951, the Registry is a centralized statistical database on Canada¿s Native American population. The authors first adjusted the data, then added results to obtain the total population of Innus residing in the reserves during 1973-93. During that period, the Innu population living upon reserves grew from 5785 to 9245. Overall population growth corresponds to a mean annual growth rate of 2.36%. During the same period, the mean annual growth rate for Quebec¿s overall population was about 0.7%. Natural growth is responsible for almost all of the observed population growth during the study period. Such growth is due to reduced mortality amid still high fertility. Half of the Innu population in 1993 was under 22 years old. Additional results are also presented on migration, mortality, and births. The fertility level tended to decline during the period, with a reduction in total fertility from an average of 4.6 children/woman in 1973 to 3.4 children/woman in 1993. Crude migration rates show a return to the reserves since 1989, especially by women of all ages and all people aged 20-34 years.
