The debate concerning the impact of demographic aging in developed countries is reviewed, with particular attention to the situation in Canada. The author first reviews the available data on which forecasts of future trends in demographic aging are based. He then summarizes results of studies on the effect of these trends on government costs in specific areas, such as health, and on overall government costs. He concludes that Canada's position in this regard is more favorable than that of developed countries as a whole.
