This is an analysis of the evolution of emigration from Spain since 1960. Two distinct phases are identified: firstly, the period up to 1976, in which there was an average of 100,000 departures annually, and secondly, the period since 1974, in which emigration has greatly decreased. The factors affecting emigration and the regions of origin and characteristics of migrants are considered. The implications of decreased emigration for the Spanish economy are reviewed.
