An analysis of mortality differences by social class and occupation in France for the period 1975 to 1980 is presented using official data. The results show that the managerial class and high school and university teachers have the lowest mortality rates, while unskilled laborers and farm workers continue to have the highest rates of mortality. It is found that mortality differentials among social categories have been growing over the past 25 years. The effects of inactivity, age, and family life on mortality are also considered, together with differences in the causes of death by social category.
