Alpagelle, a topical contraceptive agent, has been marketed in France since 1962, to be used together with a vaginal diaphragm. This article reports on 46 cases followed for 11 years; the patients had spontaneously chosen to use Alpagelle by itself, without the vaginal diaphragm. 30 patients were multiparous, and 17 nulliparous; there were only 2 unwanted pregnancies, i.e. a Pearl index of 0.327%; both failures were due to omission of use of the product. There was also a number of planned pregnancies. The product was extremely well tolerated by all patients, and no infections were reported.
