Résumé

Provisional findings of the April 1993 general population and housing census for Chad marks the end of the need to make estimations, approximations, and suppositions each time one requested numbers on Chad. Its last demographic survey was in 1964. Now Chad has valid and recent statistical, demographic, and socioeconomic data which are indispensable for rational management and planning of resources. The Central Census Bureau began preparing for the census in January 1990. A pilot census was conducted in March 1992 to determine the optimal quality of logistical organization and to confirm the understanding of documents and their use. Chad's population size stands at 6,228,261. Its male/female sex ratio is 93/100. Population size varies from 1,252,162 in Chari Bauirmi Prefecture (includes Ndjamena) to 70,603 in Borkou Ennedi Tibesti administrative unit. 21% of the population live in urban areas. 6% of the population are nomads. Final results will likely be somewhat different than the provisional results because of the war, political instability, and border conflicts (e.g. with Libya). The census was not conducted in entire cantons in East Logone Prefecture. People in Beboto, Bodo, Bekan, Kaba-Roangar, rural Gore, and Yamodo fled to central Africa to avoid combat between the army and the CSNPD rebels and have not yet regained their territory. The census was also not done on some border islands in Lake Chad claimed by Nigeria and in some villages in Ouaddai Prefecture claimed by the Sudan.
